Position Overview:
The Activities Assistant assists the Activities Manager and/or Supervisor in carrying out the therapeutic activity program to meet the needs of our participants at the Elder Service Plan of Harbor Health Services, Inc.  The Activity Assistant is responsible for the on-site coordination and implementation of activities according to the plan established by the Activities Manager.  Duties include but are not limited to assisting the Activities Manager with program design and structure; planning and implementing daily groups and activities; assuring group and individual activities are appropriately implemented by designated staff; making appropriate adjustments to the plan as necessary based on participant needs; ensuring appropriate interactions with participants and adjustments to plan activities based on participant needs; and assisting the Supervisor with ordering materials and supplies.  
Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduate or GED, 1 year of experience working with elders (preferably in recreational activities), highly motivated and energetic, Computer literate; must have Basic skills in Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, working knowledge of physical, psycho-social and behavioral needs of the elderly population, working knowledge of recreational therapy techniques and practices of the elderly including assessment, care plan development, monitoring and evaluation needs.
Preferred Skills, Experience and Educational Requirements: Certified Nursing Assistant and/or Medical Assistant, two years of experience in a day care setting working on activities, Recreation Therapy, Music Therapy, Arts or Expressive Therapy certificates or course work.
Physical Demands of the Position:

Must be able to demonstrate team work, enthusiasm, and effective communication, must be able to communicate sensitively to support meaningful interaction with participants, must be able to recognize the signs of distress resulting from confusion and respond by diffusing a person’s anxiety and supporting their understanding of the events they experience, ability to conduct exercises and engaging group activities, must be able to demonstrate compassion for seniors and vigilance to ensure participant safety, must be able to assist in transferring participants, must be able to assist participants who are falling, must be able push clients weighing upwards of 350 lbs. in a wheel chair, must be able to lift up to 15 lbs. of Activity boxes, supplies, ability to bend, stoop, and reach, ability to stand for long periods of time, fine hand-eye coordination, ability to handle animals (including, but not limited to puppies, kittens, fowls and goats).
